When PWC was founded in 1971, it had a little more than 200 employees and worked out of a single location in Pittsburgh. Today, the company has more than 7,000 employees in 17 offices worldwide. Amid this growth, PWC’s founder and CEO, Gary McGaghey, has been working to transform the company. Today, McGaghey is credited with turning PWC into a $10 billion enterprise with offices in more than 60 countries.
During his time at PWC, McGaghey led the company’s tax and accounting software business unit. As the head of this unit, he spearheaded the transformation of PWC from a small accounting software startup into a global business with operations in more than 60 countries. During his tenure as CFO, McGaghey also served as the company’s strategic advisor, providing financial and strategic insight to the board of directors. As the lead financial officer at PWC, McGaghey helped the company achieve one of its primary goals – being an “accredited investor-advisor” with a minimum investment of $100,000. Investors often cite this goal as one of the main reasons why PWC is one of the world’s most prominent private equity firms.
In its early years, PWC’s expansion was dictated mainly by the need to find clients in new and emerging markets. Initially, the company operated out of New York City and London, but it now has offices in more than 60 locations worldwide. To make room for the growing number of employees, PWC liquidated two of its facilities in Pittsburgh and shut down the one in suburban Philadelphia. The company also shut down production in one of its Pittsburgh facilities and consolidated work there. In addition to its global headquarters, PWC maintains an operation in Greenville, South Carolina, which is the location of its subsidiary, the Greenville International Tax and Accounting Services.
While at PWC, McGaghey worked as an investment banker for numerous firms, including Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and Wasserstein, Heilers & Co. Before joining PWC, he worked as an equity research analyst at Williams Lea Tag & Kidd, incl. a Philadelphia investment bank.
